This $1,000 scholarship is awarded in memory of former Hawthorn Elementary teacher and the first woman mayor of Salem, Sue Morgan. Mrs. Morgan was a passionate advocate for putting students first and helping others, no matter their circumstances. She believed in resilience, kindness, and the power of making a difference. Through this scholarship, we honor her legacy by supporting students as they take their next steps after high school, whether that be college or trade school.
This scholarship isn’t just about grades or awards. It’s about dedication, perseverance, and making a difference. Mrs. Morgan believed in working hard every day to grow your mind, but she also understood that success looks different for everyone. She valued effort over perfection, knowing that a student who gave their all, even if their best meant earning C’s, deserved just as much pride and recognition as someone who earned straight A’s. What mattered most to her was commitment, resilience, and a genuine desire to learn, improve, show empathy for others, and spread kindness.
Your essay is the heart of your application. We don’t just want a summary of your experiences. We want to see them through your words. Take us on a journey from the challenges you’ve faced to the solutions you’ve found.
✔ Be specific. Instead of saying you "help others," describe a moment that captures this. Who did you help? What did you do? Why did it matter?
✔ Show, don’t just tell. Paint a picture with vivid examples. If you’ve overcome adversity, bring us into that struggle. What obstacles did you face, how did you feel, and how did you work through them? What positive advice do you have for others who may one day go through these same struggles?
✔ Highlight impact. Whether it's a single act of kindness or an ongoing effort in your community, tell us exactly how your actions made a difference.
✔ Connect it to your future. How have these experiences shaped who you are today? How will they influence your goals as you take the next step in your education or career?
